Freeplane is a free and open source software application that supports thinking, sharing information, getting things done at work, in school and at home. It provides you a set of tools for mind mapping (also known as concept mapping or information mapping) and navigating the mapped information. Freeplane’s capabilities will appeal to power users, but for the typical user is also a more robust alternative to Xmind, Mindmeister, and similar mind mapping software.

How to extract:

  1. Download Freeplane-Setup-x.x.x.exe and extract to a folder of your choice;
  2. Delete everything except the [runtime] folder;
  3. Download FreeplanePortable-x.x.x.paf.exe and run;
  4. Move the previously saved [runtime] folder in the newly created [FreeplanePortable] one;
  5. Navigate to [FreeplanePortable\App\AppInfo\Launcher] folder and open the FreeplanePortable.ini file;
  6. Change the last line to: FREEPLANE_JAVA_HOME=%PAL:AppDir%\..\runtime and save it;
  7. Launch FreeplanePortable.exe.

paint.net is an image and photo editing software with support for layers, unlimited undo, image effects and a tabbed thumbnail interface. The program includes a variety of paint bushes and selection tools as well as image filters such as sharpening, red-eye removal, distortion, noise etc.

The program supports plugins and will automatically start in 64-bit within an operating system that supports it.

@Cattleya: Make sure you download the zip package, because the installer does the following:
“The kernel mode driver used by CPU-Z is installed on the system, that avoids to install / remove it at every run.”
The portable version leaves no driver behind, just tested it.

@kc: I used to do sysadmin for a small non-profit org. 7 pc’s and 2 printers, no big deal. I carried all my tools on a pendrive. Off course I had admin-rights, but this is a typical scenario a lot of us are in, so it’s not entirely useless, portable is the way to go for sysadmins 😉

Lintalist is a context-sensitive text expander with abbreviations, shortcuts, plugins, and scripts. It allows you to store and (incrementally) search and edit texts in bundles and paste a selected text in your active program. Entered text can be interactive, such as automatically inserting the current time and date, requesting (basic) user input, or making a selection from a list, as well as running a script.

The program supports keyboard shortcuts or abbreviations to paste the text (or run a script) without opening the search window, and allows images and formatted text, including HTML, markdown, and RTF.

Notepad++ is a tabbed source code editor and Notepad replacement with a customizable interface. Includes source code “folding”, allowing users to quickly reduce and expand sections of code to see the overall document. In addition, it features multi-language syntax highlighting, auto-completion, Perl-compatible regular expression search/replace, macro recording and playback, document map etc.
